Vice President, Communications
This position is responsible for directing the association's communications programs and activities, establishing the Aerospace Industries Association (AIA) as the premier association of the aerospace industry and its president as the industry's spokesperson.
Nature and Scope of Work: This position reports directly to the president. Reporting to this position are the assistant vice president for communications, director of research, director of executive communications, web manager, and an administrative assistant. This position is responsible for developing and implementing AIA's overall communications strategy to support the association's policy, industry advocacy and membership goals. It provides brand leadership resulting in the positioning of AIA as the premier organization in the U.S. representing the aerospace industry.
The position will provide input, leadership, guidance and direction for all communications activities of the association. Developing a comprehensive, pro-active communications strategy that ensures AIA's and the industry's message reach diverse domestic and international audiences (government and regulators, congress, industry and opinion leaders, member companies, and the general public) effectively and in a timely fashion through major media outlets is a core function of the position.
This role will work with AIA's senior leadership team to ensure that all communications efforts align with AIA's mission, strategic plan, and overall objectives. In addition, the position will:
Liaise with staff to identify potential media issues and develop effective strategies to respond. Advise the president and professional staff on all communications matters; inform media about industry issues and developments; and provide direction and input for publication and related outreach efforts.
Identify and develop speaking platforms for the president and senior staff that support the association's policy and advocacy objectives, and recommend speaking engagements. Oversee and delegate the development and production of all communication materials, articles, op-editorials, letters to the editor, and newsletter columns for the president's by-line.
Develop and maintain an active network of public affairs contacts within the industry, federal agencies, the administration, international organizations, and other important sources. Work with other associations to identify common issues that are appropriate for concerted actions. Keep highly informed of industry developments through wide reading and contacts with industry and government officials.
Serve as staff liaison to the Communications Council, its executive committee, the Washington Public Relations Committee, and ad hoc project groups. Inform council members of fast-breaking developments and develop industry positions. Host informative local breakfast or luncheon meetings for the committee.
Direct several meetings annually including the association's largest public event, the Year-End Review and Forecast luncheon. For council meeting, formulate agenda, develop background information and materials, select site, takes minutes, and approve associated expenses.
Provide direction and input for the association's web page as a front line communications medium.
Provide direction and input for the association's publications program, planning the content and schedule of all editorial products.
Responsibilities:
- Design, articulate, and implement the organization's short and long-term communication strategies.
- Represent the issues important to the aerospace industry to a variety of audiences.
- Present AIA's vision, mission, values and goals.
- Refine and implement an effective communications strategy to support AIA's strategic plan. This includes developing and expanding media and marketing and brand strategies.
- Serve as primary media spokesperson for the association. Must be a strong voice for the aerospace industry and for AIA.
- Oversee the development and of all organizational communications including news releases, statements, op-eds. letters to the editor, and other materials.
- Plan and implement news media events and press briefings to highlight committee activities.
- Initiate and conduct news media activities to ensure positive working relationships with national, regional, and local news media representatives and provide receptive outlets for news and information generated by the association.
- Lead, manage, and mentor team of communications professionals.
- Develop new and innovative strategies to raise public awareness and effectively communicate the issues important to the aerospace industry to the general public.
- Develop, oversee and manage an annual budget for the communication function.
Qualifications:
- Exceptional and proven written and oral communications skills
- Demonstrated success in developing a sophisticated communication strategy.
- A minimum of 10 years of evolving leadership experience in communications.
- Must have an extensive network of media relations' contacts and had success in utilizing that network.
- Experience in public affairs, advocacy or crisis communications.
- Proven track record of success in creating effective communication plans to inform and engage the different audiences.
- Success in leveraging new and traditional media tools, including but not limited to press releases, position papers, news releases, statements, op-eds. letters to the editor, online/web communications, viral marketing campaigns, social networks and other materials.
- Understanding of non-profit industry or trade associations, with experience in the aviation and/or defense industry highly desirable.
