U.S. Space Industrial Base Hindered by Export Controls

Policies governing the export of commercial satellites and their components are hurting the U.S. space industrial base, according to a report released Feb. 19 by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). The study has produced, for the first time, quantifiable data about the unintended consequences of export controls to American second- and third-tier suppliers. The study's authors, a panel of experts that includes former AIA President and CEO John Douglass, recommend removing commercial communications satellites, subsystems and components from the U.S. Munitions List and suggested further study to determine whether other non-military systems should be available for export. The study also recommended an annual review of space systems to assess their strategic importance to the U.S. and determine whether the technologies are already available overseas. AIA strongly endorses the findings of this study and looks forward to helping address the challenges identified by CSIS.

AIA Urges Passage of Pending Bilateral Trade Agreements

President and CEO Marion Blakey has urged leaders of both the House Ways & Means and Senate Finance Committees to support free trade agreements with Colombia, Panama and Korea. AIA is a member of the Latin America Trade Coalition (latradecoalition.org) and the U.S.-Korea FTA Business Coalition (uskoreafta.org), both of which are supporting the trade agreements. The Colombia and Panama agreements will likely be considered before the Korea agreement, and AIA and its coalition partners would like to see swift approval of all three agreements in Congress.

Presidential Candidates Outline Defense Positions

Washington analysts are dissecting the statements, voting records and advisors of the remaining four major presidential candidates for a glimpse into their positions on several of AIA's top issues, including defense budgets and acquisition reform.
